Don't Get Too Attached

Oh, I got an email with an attachment from our head of security. I'll just open it up and see what it is.

STOP RIGHT THERE! Never open an attachment on an unexpected email! It could be a virus! You don't know who really sent it!

What? Who are you?

I'm the head of security.

Well, did you really send me this email?

Absolutely.

It should be safe to open then, right?

Absolutely not.

What? Why not? I just verified that you, the head of security, really sent it.

I could be an imposter. Trust no one.

A what? Hey, where'd you go?

I hear our new head of security is doing an amazing job.

We don't have a head of security.

Sometimes companies really do "test" their employees by sending emails asking them to do things that they should never do, like follow a link to enter personal details or open an attachment from a stranger. (see this, and this, and this) You really can't trust anyone these days. Not even people who tell you not to trust anyone. And if you can't trust those people, does that mean you should trust everyone? Security can be confusing sometimes.
